Jonathan’s advice

Combi or system boiler for a North East home

The right boiler depends on how many people use hot water at the same time, the water supply and the space available. The largest boiler is not automatically the best one.

When a combi suits the house

A combi heats hot water as you use it and does not need a separate hot water cylinder. It can work well where space is tight and hot water demand is straightforward.

When a system boiler and cylinder make sense

A system boiler works with a hot water cylinder. That stored supply can be a better fit for a larger home or several bathrooms where taps and showers may be used together.

What I check before recommending either

I check the incoming water supply, the existing pipework, the number of bathrooms, the available cylinder space and how the household actually uses hot water.

  • How many showers or taps run at the same time
  • Whether there is room for a suitable cylinder
  • The existing boiler and pipe layout
  • The heating load and radiator sizes
  • The budget for the complete installation
