Jonathan’s advice

What to do before the plumber arrives

The first job in a leak is to stop more water entering the pipework and keep everyone safe. You do not need to find or repair the fault yourself.

Make the area safe

Keep people away from wet floors. If water is near lights, sockets or the consumer unit, do not touch wet electrical fittings. Switch off the affected circuit only if you can reach the consumer unit safely.

Stop and drain the water

Turn off the internal stop tap, which is often under the kitchen sink. Open the cold taps to drain down the pipework, then use towels or containers to limit damage while help is on the way.

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the leak
  • Take a clear photograph if it is safe to do so
  • Do not cut into a ceiling that is holding water
  • Tell me where the water appears and whether it stops after isolation

If you smell gas

Do not operate electrical switches or use a flame. Open doors and windows, turn off the gas at the meter if it is safe, leave the property, and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
