Jonathan’s advice

What changes the cost of a new boiler

I cannot give an honest boiler price from a photograph or a few details over the phone. I need to see the boiler, the pipework and how the house uses hot water. I then give you one price before the work starts.

A straight swap is the simplest job

If the new boiler is going in the same place and the existing pipework and flue route are suitable, there is less labour and fewer materials involved.

Moving a boiler, changing the type of system, running a long or vertical flue, or replacing unsuitable pipework all add work. I point those items out when I quote rather than adding them after the job has started.

The house matters as much as the boiler

I look at the number of bathrooms, the hot water demand, the radiator sizes and the condition of the existing system. A combi can be right for one house and the wrong answer for another, even if the houses look similar from outside.

I recommend the boiler and system that suit the property and the budget. I do not push the dearest option for the sake of it.

What my quote covers

The quote sets out the agreed work. If I find something neither of us could have known about, I stop and explain it before doing anything extra.

  • Removing the old boiler
  • Fitting and connecting the new boiler
  • Any agreed pipework, flue or control changes
  • Flushing, testing and commissioning
  • Registration of the completed work
